First, what exactly is a low carb diet? Low carb diets are any diet that limits, but does not entirely exclude, such items as bread, grains, rice, starchy vegetables and fruit. These diets also stress sources of protein and fat. There are many types of low-carb diets that exist. Each diet program restricts the amounts of carbohydrates in varying amounts and types. Some examples of carb restricting diets include: The Atkins Diet (1972); The Protein Power Diet (1995); The Schwarzbein Principle Diet(1999); and The Life Without Bread Diet (2000). Just to name a few!
Second, do low-carb diets give you an edge in losing weight? When you first start a low-carb diet, you're usually told that you need to reduce or stop your carb intake. Actually, without carbs your body cannot produce the energy it needs to perform everyday tasks. So when you reduce your carbs your body burns stored carbs. This releases water from your body and that results in "rapid" weight loss. Unfortunately if you stop dieting the weight comes right back.
Third, do low carb diets help you lose weight safely and permanently? At first following a low-carb diet will allow you to lose more weight than the typical low-fat, low-calorie diet. Usually this increased weight loss does not continue. A low-carb diet may provide some health benefits depending on which foods you eat as part of the diet. However, if you eat too many foods that are high in saturated fat you will negate any potential health-benefits. Any diet, if followed over too long a period, can result in long-term health effects such as heart disease, liver problems, cancer, and kidney or bone problems.
A better approach to dieting is to make a basic change in your life style. Develop healthy eating habits that support and increase your bodies natural metabolism. Eating at least 5 healthy, but smaller meals a day has been shown to produce remarkable results. To learn more about this go to: http://www.No-Mor-Fat.com
